Why finding a good heating engineer in Paris is harder than elsewhere
Searching for a heating engineer for an emergency repair in Paris brings up dozens of near-identical websites with a premium-rate number, a “24/7” promise and no address. The Paris housing stock, very old and dominated by wall-mounted gas boilers in flats, explains this intense competition.
The first selection criterion is transparency. A reliable company shows an address, a starting price and reviews on an online review platform. Generic directories and flyers slipped under the door usually meet none of these conditions.
The second criterion is the nature of the problem. A boiler that occasionally goes into safety mode, a lukewarm radiator or a heat pump using more power than usual is not an emergency. These signals call for a full diagnosis, often during the annual service. A total heating breakdown in mid-winter, on the other hand, needs a visit within 24 hours.
The rules that frame home heating in France
Boiler servicing is not optional. French regulations require an annual visit and the issue of a certificate.
“Annual servicing of a boiler with a rated output between 4 and 400 kilowatts is mandatory.” Decree no. 2009-649 of 9 June 2009, Légifrance
The same logic applies to heat pumps containing more than 2 kg of refrigerant. Beyond the legal requirement, safety is the real issue: according to Santé publique France, nearly 4,000 carbon monoxide poisonings are recorded every year in France, and poorly maintained heating appliances are among the main causes.
1. Murfy: prevention and a full technical check
Murfy is a French SME founded in 2018, first known for repairing and refurbishing household appliances. The company has expanded into heating and air conditioning with the same model: Murfy says it employs 250 technicians and does not use subcontractors. It is listed in the French government’s company directory (Annuaire des entreprises) as a social and solidarity economy company (ESS).
Its offer is built around prevention. Most heating problems reported in autumn come from a poorly maintained appliance: a dirty burner, pressure too low, a worn part. Murfy builds its offer around that moment, with a service that doubles as a full technical check, and also repairs heating systems by appointment.
What a Murfy visit includes
- Fixed published prices: 95 euros for a thermodynamic water heater, 135 euros for a gas boiler or an air-to-air heat pump, from 135 euros for an air conditioner, 195 euros for an air-to-water heat pump or a pellet stove, all including VAT and with no hidden costs according to the brand.
- Online booking in 3 minutes, with slots within 48 hours in most areas covered. Customers choose their slot when booking.
- Carbon monoxide measurement and checks of the safety components, wear parts and durability of the appliance on a gas boiler.
- A repairer’s eye: the technicians repair appliances every day and spot signs of wear before a breakdown.
- Detailed report and maintenance certificate that complies with the regulations, to show the insurer.
- No repair without agreement: if a problem is found, the technician draws up a quote and does not go ahead without approval.
More than 450,000 customers have already used Murfy, according to the company.
National networks and their contracts
Large networks have a clear advantage: physical branches, servicing contracts that often include the call-out in case of a breakdown, and standardised processes.
2. Savelys: a repair flat rate and remote monitoring
Savelys, formerly Engie Home Services, relies on 3,000 technicians and nearly 200 branches in France. Its gas boiler repair flat rate starts at 142.90 euros and includes the call-out, diagnosis and labour; if a part needs replacing, the technician draws up a free quote on site. Under contract, the call-out time is 48 working hours, reduced to 24 working hours if heating or hot water fails completely, and repairs can take place on Sundays. The illigo service monitors the gas boiler or heat pump remotely and triggers a response within 2 hours if a fault is detected.
The Sécurité contract for a gas boiler starts at 178.78 euros a year, and a service visit without a contract at 132 euros.
3. IZI by EDF: the Paris branch of a major group
IZI by EDF’s Paris branch, on boulevard du Montparnasse, has been open since 2006. It has 8 heating technicians and more than 9,000 customers, and covers the Paris arrondissements and the western Île-de-France. Its services range from boiler servicing to repairs and replacement. The brand lists a service visit with no commitment from 155.39 euros, bookable online, and a Sécurité contract at 183.71 euros a year including VAT with repairs included; any repair is subject to a quote signed before the work.
Paris heating firms
Paris firms have two strengths: detailed knowledge of Paris buildings and fast response in emergencies.
4. PMD-Gaz: a Paris firm with its own technicians
PMD-Gaz is a plumbing and heating firm based in Paris 12th since 2018. The company says it has 6 to 9 technicians depending on the season, all employed on permanent contracts, with no subcontracting. Gas boiler servicing starts at 135 euros with a CO measurement, the servicing contract costs 165 euros a year, repairs start at 90 euros with a free diagnosis before the quote, and boiler replacement starts at 1,990 euros. The firm advertises an average call-out time within 48 hours and a 7-day emergency service.
5. Plomb’Art: the north-east Paris specialist
Based on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis in the 10th arrondissement for more than fifteen years, Plomb’Art works first in the 10th and neighbouring arrondissements, and covers all twenty. Its prices are published in advance: 160 euros for gas boiler servicing with a carbon monoxide test, from 115 euros for a repair and diagnosis with a quote before the repair, 80 euros for flue sweeping. The firm handles gas emergencies on Sundays.
6. Artisan André Père et Fils: the night-time emergency option
A family business active since 1994, Artisan André Père et Fils advertises a 24-hour, 7-day service, including Sundays and public holidays, with a call-out possible within the hour in Paris. The company publishes its heating prices: call-out at 65 euros excluding VAT, boiler fault diagnosis at 116 euros excluding VAT, wall-mounted boiler servicing contract at 147 euros excluding VAT, with a 50% surcharge in the evening, at weekends and on public holidays. It highlights several approved brands, including De Dietrich and Saunier Duval.
Ranking methodology
The six companies were assessed on 6 November 2026 against the same nine criteria, using their public pages (service and price pages, FAQs, terms and conditions, legal notices, branch pages), third-party review platforms and the French government’s company directory. The first three criteria, assessed at brand level on what each company publishes, are the same in every heating ranking on this site that includes Murfy; the next six are specific to heating servicing and repairs. Garanka is not ranked: its offer pages could not be accessed on the assessment date.
Scoring grid. Each criterion met is worth 1 point and is marked Yes. A criterion that is not met, or for which the information was not found, is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and is worth 0 points. All criteria carry the same weight, 1/9 of the overall score each (about 11%). The rank follows from the overall score. Two companies with the same overall score are ranked tied, at the same rank, with no tie-breaker, the sponsored featured brand included, and the next rank is skipped.
| Criterion | What earns the point |
|---|---|
| 1. Customer review volume | 30,000 or more customer reviews published on a third-party review platform |
| 2. Employed technicians | repairs carried out by technicians employed by the brand, number published on its website |
| 3. Social and solidarity economy company | “ESS - Économie Sociale et Solidaire” status shown for the company in the French government’s company directory |
| 4. Published boiler servicing price | price of a gas boiler service visit or contract shown on the website, without requesting a quote |
| 5. Published heat pump servicing price | price of an air-to-water heat pump service visit or contract shown on the website |

Tenant or owner: who pays
In Paris, more than half of main residences are rented. For an individual boiler, annual servicing and minor repairs are the tenant’s responsibility. Replacing a worn-out or broken boiler falls to the owner. With communal heating, the contact is the building’s managing agent, not a heating engineer called individually.
The heat pump case
A heat pump that heats poorly in winter is not always broken. A dirty exchanger, an unsuitable setting or poorly configured defrosting is enough to reduce efficiency. A full service, priced at 195 euros at Murfy, rules out these causes before considering a repair. For a reversible air conditioner that heats or cools poorly, the guide to finding a certified air conditioning repairer details the certificate to ask for and the announced lead times.
What to check before calling a heating engineer in Paris
Some checks take five minutes and avoid a paid call-out. They do not replace a professional, but they help describe the problem precisely.
- Check the boiler pressure: on a wall-mounted boiler, the gauge should read between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold. Below that, repressurising is sometimes enough.
- Check the thermostat and its batteries: a room thermostat with flat batteries or wrong settings cuts the heating demand.
- Reset only once: if the boiler goes into safety mode, one reset is fine. If it faults again, do not insist.
- Write down the error code shown on the display, so the technician can bring the right part.
- Bleed radiators that are lukewarm at the top: trapped air stops hot water circulating.
A heating system in good working order is the first lever for controlling consumption. Other items count too, as explained in the guide to habits that reduce your electricity bill. In a poorly insulated home, attic insulation is often the most cost-effective job before replacing a heating appliance.
Good practice
- Choose an identifiable company rather than a directory number with no physical address or reviews you can read.
- Ask for a written quote before any part replacement: the call-out fee never covers parts.
- Leave the gas circuit to a professional: any work on a gas boiler is a job for a qualified professional.
- Schedule the annual service: besides the risk of breakdown, a missing certificate can cause problems with the insurer. Prices and options for boiler servicing in Paris are compared in a dedicated article.
- Tell a water leak from a heating fault: a leak on a radiator fitting first calls for the right plumbing reflexes, covered in the article on a water leak and the first steps before the plumber.
Low-income households can also use France’s energy voucher to pay part of their heating costs, including some fuel bills.
